Simple Ways You Can Improve Your Heart Health
Men and women alike are at risk of developing heart disease at some point during their lives, and it remains the leading cause of death in the United States. Stroke, heart attack, high blood pressure – though genetics can play a role in their development, you can still significantly cut your risk of having to deal with any of them if you can follow some simple guidelines in your daily life. They’re not impossible, either! In fact, believe it or not they’re actually pretty simple.
Easy Steps To Better Heart Health
As you probably already know, your diet makes an enormous difference in your short- and long-term heart health and wellness. The old saying “you are what you eat” is not a fable, by any stretch. You can start by adding salmon, chicken, and even soy-based products as protein sources instead of relying exclusively on red meat. You’ll reduce the amount of cholesterol and unhealthy fats you take in, plus spice up your boring old meat-and-potatoes menu with a wide variety of new meal possibilities.
Next step is to start including more leafy green vegetables and fruits in your diet. Blueberries, tomatoes, spinach, broccoli – all of these (and plenty of others) provide plenty of essential vitamins, minerals, plus fiber, antioxidants, and the omega-3 fatty acids so beneficial to your health.
Now that you’re eating better, it’s time to get more active. All it really takes is about 30 minutes a day four or five times a week of moderate movement to get started. Walking around the block is a perfect way to start out, and don’t worry because speed is not an issue! No need to even jog. What’s more important is that you get off the couch and get the heart pumping and the blood and body moving.
If you have a desk job or don’t otherwise move around much during the workday, consider changing over to a standing desk, or at least take frequent breaks to stand up, stretch, and walk around the office a little bit. You’d be surprised how a short stroll can actually energize and help you focus for the rest of the workday. Plus the weight you’ll start losing helps by putting less stress on the heart and body, in general. In the end, probably the easiest thing to remember is pretty simple: eat less and do more!
